Webinar on Ending Ultra-Poverty in India through the Graduation Approach – The Nudge Foundation at Skoll Forum 2022
By Bobby Irven • April 13, 2022 • 1 minute read
This session sheds light on the state of ultra-poverty in India and the potential for the Graduation approach model to end it in this decade.
With 23 million households ( 5.9% of the population) living in extreme poverty, there is a clear need for an evidence based approach to end ultra poverty in India. Globally, the Graduation approach is recognised as an evidence rich model to sustainably pull households out of ultra poverty by enabling them to participate in the social, financial, and economic development activities in their community.
Despite a strong social welfare system and 8 million SHGs in place, ultra-poor households in India are hard to reach and remain underserved. It is for this reason that India has made addressing the plight of the SC/ST households & PVTGs a national priority. With states like Bihar and a thriving non-profit ecosystem leading the way, the Graduation approach is in its early stages of adoption in India and the time is right for policymakers, payers and doers to come together and commit to scaling the Graduation approach to end ultra poverty.
