Abdurrahman Syebubakar is the Country Lead for Indonesia. He is responsible for spearheading efforts to scale the Graduation approach in Indonesia and driving sustained impact on extreme poverty by engaging and influencing governments and other key stakeholders to adopt, implement, and scale graduation policies and programs in the country.
Prior to joining BRAC’s Ultra-Poor Graduation Initiative (UPGI), Abdurrahman served as the Asian Development Bank’s research team leader for the 2021 SDG Voluntary Local Review (VLR) of DKI Jakarta – the capital of Indonesia, and previously led the research and analysis team of the Ministry of Social Affairs’ Centre of Data and Information. He developed Indonesia’s Single Window Social Services and led its implementation from 2015 to 2019. He also previously worked for the Vice President’s National Team for Accelerating Poverty Reduction, United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Secretariat, Centre for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), and Volunteers in Overseas Cooperative Assistance (VOCA). Across these organizations, he’s been involved in policy advice, design, implementation and management, monitoring and evaluation, and research functions for programs/projects focused on poverty reduction and social protection, social entrepreneurship, basic social services, human development, and the SDGs.
Abdurrahman holds a master’s degree in Development Administration with a special focus on the political economy of development from the Australian National University (ANU). He has written extensively about development issues in Indonesia relating to poverty reduction and social protection, human development and SDGs, democratic politics, and anti-corruption.
